PHNOM PENH, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia celebrated its traditional New Year, which arrived at 07:11 p.m. local time on Friday, with fireworks and concerts.
Colored explosion of fireworks has lighted up the sky over Wat Phnom, the capital's historical site, Friday night to mark the arrival of the Year of the Dragon.
The fireworks had been shot for about 5 minutes, catching the eyes of thousands of New Year revelers.
Meanwhile, the governor of Phnom Penh Kep Chuk Tema and other officials organized a Buddhism-based traditional New Year greeting event at the Wat Phnom temple. "May the New Year--the Year of the Dragon--bring Cambodian people good luck, good health and prosperity," he told the event.
Concerts have been performed at different places in the capital to entertain revelers at nights, according to the press release from the Phnom Penh Municipality.
Cambodia celebrates Khmer New Year from April 13 to 15. To greet the New Year angel, Cambodian people light candles or incense sticks and offer the angel fruits and soft drinks.
Families bring food, cash and praying stuffs to Buddhist monks in pagodas in order to wish for longevity, good luck, happiness and prosperity in the New Year.
The New Year celebration is also a chance for young girls and boys gather together and enjoy playing a variety of traditional games as well as dancing and singing.
