Ladue, MO (KSDK) - Students at John Burroughs School raised more than $23,000 to build a school in Cambodia with their biennial dance marathon fundraiser.

On February 3, 500 of the school's 600 students attended the event on a scheduled day off. The dance marathon began at noon and lasted until midnight, with students passing the time hours with a dodge ball tournament, potato sack races, a pie-eating contest, as well as dancing hourly to "Cotton Eye Joe" and the musical stylings of a student band and rap group.

About $6,200 came from student donations and a door-to-door fundraising effort. More than $12,600 was raised via admission cost for the dance marathon. The remaining money came through corporate donations.

The school's student congress got behind the idea of building a school for Cambodian children because of a teacher's summer work there through the Teachers Across Borders program. English teacher Dr. Rick Sandler, who visited Cambodia in 2010, told the students at John Burroughs School of the horrible state of education in that country. That school year, Sandler collected 90 boxes of books for school libraries in Cambodia.
