PHNOM PENH, 22 February 2012: Cambodia closed 2011 with 2.88 million international tourists, a substantial increase of 14.9% over 2010, according to Cambodia’s Statistic and Tourism Information Department at the Tourism Ministry.

In December alone, the country received 298,344 visits, up 19.5% over the same month of 2010.

During 2011, neighbouring Vietnam was the top contributor with 614,090 trips up 19.4% compared to 2010. Thailand ranked at eighth supplied 116,758 tourists down 21%.

By region and market share, Asia Pacific supplied as much as 73.1% or 2,106,601 trips with a growth of 16.6%. ASEAN represented a 38.2% market share (1,101,111 trips). East Asia followed with a 29.7% share.

Europe representing a 18.8% market share grew 10.9% supplying 542,863 tourists. Eastern Europe grew 68.4% though the numbers were still relatively small (54,401).

From January to December, 51.4% of tourists (1,480,407) came through the two main international airports. Siem Reap Airport served 835,172 tourists, or 29%, while Phnom Penh Airport served 645,235, or 22.4%. Tourists crossing at land checkpoints reached 1,320,311, or 45.8% of the total.

Siem Reap, the country’s main destination received the largest percentage of international arrivals at 55.9% (1,610,076) increasing 23.4% compared to 2010. Phnom Penh, the capital and all other destinations took the balance (1,271,786) or 44.1%.

The data showed 709,616 Cambodian travelled overseas in 2011, up 40.5%.

In December, arrivals from Thailand improved by 24.5% from 12,560 to 15,640. Russia, China and Australia recorded growth rates of 89.6%, 59.6% and 44.2% respectively. Most countries in Europe showed declines or just marginal improvements; UK (+0.7%); France (-9.9%) and Germany (-18.8%).

Vietnam once again tops the "tourist" list, Vietnam also seems to freely leave and enter Cambodia at anytime they want.
