Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum to resume in 2014

Published: 19-Feb-12

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - Prime Minister Hun Sen has confirmed that the Cambodia Development Cooperation Forum (CDCF), held by the government and foreign donors every year since 1993, will be suspended for two years and resume in 2014, Rasmei Kampuchea reported Sunday.

Referring to mounting pressures over the Greek debt crisis and recent violence in Athens, the prime minister reportedly said that the meeting should not be held in such circumstances.

"Who will feel like announcing aid to Cambodia?," he was quoted as saying during a meeting with about 30 international and non-governmental organizations on Friday.

"And if aid is smaller, people will definitely claim that donors cut off aid to Cambodia. So working with individual partners is better than holding the forum," he reportedly said.

The newspaper noted that the annual CDCF meeting usually receives pledges of aid amounting to about one billion dollars a year.

Hun Sen said it will be suspended for 2 years. Can he keep his words, or will it be like the time he said he will slit his own throat if illegal logging still continues back in the year 2000.

I think this uneducated Vietminh will further drive the country into dept and get more loans from Uncle Ho and Uncle Mao

For those of us overseas, it is heartbreaking to see our country slowly sold out to foreigners. In a generation or two, our kids won't be care about Cambodia. The kids in Cambodia don't even like the kids overseas, they will just be foreigners. The fate of the country is already in Unclo Ho and Uncle Mao hands. They won't let it slipped off their hands. The ruling class will be like those dictators in Central America. They will be rich while the country is 99% poor. Who cares about this stinky place. Build our future in the US or other places in the world. Our kids won't ever need this place at all. As long as the country is not going through another killings and deaths, let them become their own destiny in a peaceful evolution.

What could Hun Sen be thinking?
Hun Sen being street smart as always, may realize that opening the country up too much will destabilize his government. Too many land conflicts. Too many critics. Too many criminal roaming the streets. Is it better to be poor and easily controlled? Your thoughts?
