Any fighting will involve people and weapons. The will and tactics come from the people and the weapons, from technology. Technology counters technology. The Viets' will to protect their country has never diminished. On the technology side, China's technology is better than Vietnam, but not the US and the West. They let China grows economically, but will contain China aggression militarily. In the Cold War geopolitics, everyone was against the Soviet empire. It's now the world against China and the allies of her dictatorial regime. Vietnam is in a better diplomatic position now.
When everyone talks of China economy and military, it's only the growth rate that surpasses other countries. Growth rate is not the same as economic and military power base. The US and the West are decades ahead in terms of economic and military power base. Look at how much the US spent on military - $600 billion plus versus China's $90 billion, not counting the military stockpiles. Look at how much people earn in the US, at least 40K per year vs. a couple thousands in China.

Whose individual annual income standard is base on anyway? America or China? A $40,000 a year income may sound a lot if you don't live in America and $12,000 a year may sounds very shitty if you're living in America. One dollar can buy you more shit if you live in China or Cambodia. One dollar can't by much shit if you live in America. So just because some Yankee is making 40K a year and some Chink is making 12K a year does not mean that their living standard are difference. It more probable that they're about the same. Hell, maybe that 12K a year income Chinese guy in China might enjoy life more than that 40K a year income American guy living in America.

This is called the purchasing power- meaning that even though you earned less money doesn't mean you are worse off than people living in other countries who earned more. Just think about Japan. The Japanese are earning much more than average Americans or Australians, but they have less purchasing power because everything is very expensive in Japan.
Likewise, in China, $12,000 might offer the Chinese a better living standard than the Americans who earned $40,000 because things are less expensive in China than in America. Just think like this: almost everything people buy in the shops around the world are made from China. If we can buy them this cheap, how cheap these things are sold in China? Probably peanuts and so the Chinese don't have to spend much money to enjoy the same living standard like we do in the West. The Chinese can buy the Chinese-made cars, the Cherry for maybe $3000-$4000 and the Great Wall maybe for $9000-$10000, while we buy the Fords and the Jeeps in America for $40,000-$50,000. Purchasing power is the advantage the Chinese have over the people in the West, including America.

Thai soldiers kill Cambodian logger
PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) -Thai soldiers have shot dead a Cambodian man for illegal logging in Thailand's Sisaket province, the victim’s father said Saturday.
“Chea Kim Long was killed yesterday when he went into Sisaket province, Thailand, to make a living from logging,” said father Chea Touch, adding that he was the only one among seven children who could help support his family.
The victim's body has not yet been returned to Cambodia.
Border official Touch Ra said he had not yet been informed about the death.

Instead of looking how far we have to go forward to catch the rest of the world, you can look at how far Cambodian have been travelling. Cambodia use to be the most populated land mine in the world and now some of the land are used to cultivate food for the country.
