The road to stardom in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) - What are the difficulties of being a television star in Cambodia and what are the obstacles every star has to overcome to become popular?

Television programs have highlighted how vulnerable young female stars can be to the influence of money, notably offers of becoming a mistress to a wealthy man.

Others disagree. Some stars who are inexperienced or poorly educated often appear in concerts and films due to their beauty. However, this could be a reason to avoid selling their beauty.

"I don't deny the view that the selling of beauty goes on in the entertainment industry," said Ny Monineath (pictured), a well-known Cambodian movie star. "But I'm well-known these days because of my knowledge from acting school and my artistic talent."

Famous for her sad, romantic roles, Monineath said the entertainment industry in Cambodia was very complicated. "Even if we're good at time management and take a professional approach to our work, the demands can be very heavy," she said.

Despite frequent fatigue and occasional criticism, “I love my job as a star," she said. "For me, it's a good job with integrity that allows me to entertain audiences."

Asked if she'd ever been asked to become someone's mistress, she said "not usually ... but I'd remain calm if someone asked me."

Since she has been working in the entertainment industry for seven years, Monineath said she could now earn a good living and was able to support her family.

Bun Chan Nimol, a composer and a Hang Meas production director, noted that performers had to be tested to see if they were good enough before they became superstars and that moral stature was taken into account.

“I believe that other young superstars wouldn't spoil society,” she said. "A real artistic performer has a strong personality to help society, educate others and promote our customs so working as a star would reflect our society."

Ke Socheat, vice-president of the art department at national broadcaster Television Kampuchea (TVK), said the performances of young stars these days is deteriorating as many are chosen by relatives and lack experience.

"Every young performer should be trained in standard acting school," he said. "At the same time, they themselves have to pay much attention to their tasks as their duty is to perform well and promote our art."

I wish you were mine! but belong to any decent Khmer guys is just fine!!

I guess Khmerization wanted Ny Monineath to become real Reajani so he arranges her picture and the King to be close by (or may be it's just Google!)! No objection from me though! I want her to be Queen so our next King will be the Master Artist of the world!
