As Cambodia embarks on a historic Davis Cup debut, entertainment and gaming industry giants NagaWorld are stepping in to wholly support the national team in its Asia Oceania Group IV campaign in Qatar’s capital, Doha, from April 16 to 22.
The Kingdom earned the right to play in one of the oldest and most prestigious team competitions in the world, involving more than 170 countries, after the International Tennis Federation elevated the Tennis Federation of Cambodia to a B-Class membership during its annual general meeting held in Bangkok in September of last year.
Cambodia join Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Myanmar, Qatar, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and the United Arab Emirates in the lowest tier of competition to fight for two promotional slots to Group III in 2013.
According to the Qatar Tennis Federation, the five-team groupings and the order of matches for the round-robin Doha leg will be announced soon.
“We at NagaWorld are as excited as any proud Cambodian that the country is making this giant leap forward in tennis. We feel the national team deserves the fullest of support and goodwill to carry out this significant mission in Doha,” NagaWorld vice-president for events, promotion and entertainment Rajesh Kumar said at a news conference yesterday, after concluding a sponsorship agreement with Tennis Federation of Cambodia secretary-general Tep Rithivit.
National Olympic Committee of Cambodia secretary-general Vath Chamroeun, who co-signed the document as a witness, hailed the deal as a great boost to Cambodian sport.
Under the terms of the agreement, specific to the 2012 Davis Cup, NagaWorld will fund the entire cost of Cambodia’s Doha campaign.
“We will support the national team from its preparations here right up to the end of its Doha schedule, including the travel costs of the contingent,” Kumar said.
NagaWorld vice-president for investor relations Kevin Nyland revealed that the decision to support the national team was spurred by the spectacular gains tennis has made in Cambodia.
“It is a reaffirmation of our faith in its potential to grow even bigger,” Nyland said.
In response to NagaWorld’s unconditional backing, Tep Rithivit said he was confident that this great sporting alliance would bring the desired results.
“On behalf of the federation, I express my sincere gratitude to the NagaWorld management for this grand gesture,” he said.
“We are expecting two very good Cambodian-American youngsters who are currently in the US to join the national team by March, just in time for a vigorous, one-month preparatory camp before the team leaves for Doha. We are looking forward to a memorable Davis Cup debut.”
