[French] Embassy helps investigate disappearance of French family

Police examining the car where the five bodies were found.

PHNOM PENH (Cambodian Herald-AFP) - The French embassy said Monday it had sent officials to work with Cambodian authorities investigating the deaths of a presumed French family whose five bodies were found in a submerged car in Kompong Speu province over the weekend.

"Our officials went to the province with the Cambodian authorities to investigate this case," an embassy official said. "The French embassy will not comment until we know the results of the investigation as to whether they committed suicide or were killed."

The corpses of presumed missing Frenchman Laurent Vallier, 42, and his four children are being kept at the provincial health department in Kompong Speu.

The white four-wheel drive vehicle owned by the widower was retrieved from a pond behind his house in southern Kompong Speu province on Saturday. The family was last seen in September.

"We're still investigating the case. We can't confirm the cause of death," said provincial police chief Keo Pisey.

An AFP reporter who visited the site saw at least four human skulls laid out on a white sheet next to the muddy vehicle as well as an open suitcase.

The French embassy said it was impossible to immediately identify the victims because of the badly decomposed state of their bodies.

But Chhay Sinarith, director of the Ministry of Interior's internal security department, said they were presumed to be Vallier and his children, aged two to 11, since four of the skulls appeared to be relatively small.

"We are still waiting for the results from the experts," he said. "Now we are appealing for witnesses who may recognise the clothes and the shoes we found in the car. It's most likely the remains belong to the missing French family."

I think family members who have to gain from their deaths killed them. Maybe some relatives of his deceased wife killed, or hired some to kill, them all so they can take the houses and big land around the houses. I saw photos in the Khmer newspaper about 2 months ago showing there are about 2 or 3 houses built inside the land where they were killed, which were owned by Laurent.
