Cambodia's foreign tourist arrivals up 14% in 2011

Visitors to Angkor Wat.

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 12 2012 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia had received 2.85 million foreign visitors in 2011, up 14 percent from 2.5 million in 2010, a tourism official said Thursday.

Kong Sopheareak, director of the statistics and tourism information department under the Tourism Ministry, said preliminary statistics for 2011 showed that Vietnam still topped the list among the top 10 arrivals with some 600,000 tourists, up 28 percent, followed by South Korea with some 330,000, up 14 percent, and China with 240,000, up about 35 percent.

Sopheareak said Chinese tourists to Cambodia have seen the rapid growth in recent years and the country expected to attract at least 1 million Chinese tourists a year by the year 2020.

In 2011 about 1.6 million of foreign visitors visited Angkor Wat temples, one of the world heritage sites, up by 23 percent from 1.3 million in 2010.

Tourism industry is one of Cambodia's four main economic pillars. The other three include garment industry, agriculture and real estates.
