Vietnam's Party leader starts visit in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Dec. 6 2011 (Xinhua) -- The Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong arrived in Cambodia on Tuesday for a 3-day state visit to cement bilateral ties between the two neighbors.

The visit, the first since he became the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam in January, 2011, is made at the invitation of Cambodia's King Norodom Sihamoni.

At Phnom Penh International Airport, Trong was greeted by Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister Kong Sam Ol, minister of the Royal Palace and other dignitaries.

During his stay, Trong will be received by King Norodom Sihamoni, former King Norodom Sihanouk and former Queen Norodom Monineath at the Royal Palace, said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

He will also meet with Chairman of the ruling Cambodian People' s Party (CPP) and President of the Senate Chea Sim, acting- President of the National Assembly Nguon Nhel, and CPP's Vice Chairman and Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Trong will pay courtesy calls on the country's Buddhist Monk Supreme Patriarch Tep Vong, head of Mahanikaya sect and the Great Supreme Patriarch Bour Kry, head of Thommayuttikaya sect.

He will lay wreaths at the Independence Monument and the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Memorial Monument before visiting a number of the economic and cultural centers in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and the Vietnamese community in Cambodia, added the press release.

At the end of his visit on Dec. 8, a Cambodia-Vietnam joint statement will be released.
