PHNOM PENH, Dec 5 (CEN) - Opposition Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Mu Sochua (pictured) announced Monday she had filed a complaint to the Human Rights Commission of the Malaysian parliament over the death of a Cambodian maid in Malaysia.
Mu Sochua told a news conference that the complaint over the death of 18-year-old Pov Srey Nic was sent to Muhammad Shaani Bin Abdullah, the head of the commission.
Under Malaysian law, she said, the commission is obliged to investigate and help draft new laws against human trafficking and any forms of human rights violation.
“I filed the complaint over Srey Nic’s death in Malaysia because her father and mother did not believe the company’s report,” Mu Sochua said. She added that the number of Cambodian maids who had died in Malaysia had risen to 11 and vowed to file a complaint for each case.
Pov Srey Nic went to work in Malaysia on August 28. A report from Manpower Co. said she committed suicide by taking pills on October 24.
Mu Sochua said the woman had been tortured by her employer and that the company offered compensation of about $1,000. The family is seeking $10,000.
