PHNOM PENH, Dec 1 (CEN) – The opposition Sam Rainsy Party has not yet assigned new members to replace the three MPs who resigned from the National Assembly last month.

Despite its reduced parliamentary presence, the party continues to urge the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) to stop confiscating land and to overhaul the membership of the National Election Committee (NEC).

Ke Sovannaroth from Siem Reap province, Thak Lany from Kompong Cham province and Nuth Rumduol from Kompong Speu province resigned on November 21.

According to Ke Sovannaroth, the party has not yet decided whether to name new members of parliament, indicating that it still had options. “If the government does not find a suitable solution," she said, "I would not be able to say what would happen next.”

She did, however, confirm that the three MPs are standing for indirect elections for the Senate on January 29, in which senators will be elected by members of the National Assembly and the country's commune councils.

Ke Sovannaroth said the resignations were a wake-up call to the government to stop confiscating people's land and forcing people out of their homes, pointing to the Boeung Kok dispute over the redevelopment of a lake in Phnom Penh.
