PHNOM PENH, December 8, 2011 (Cambodia Herald) - Lao Deputy Planning and Investment Minister Somchit Inthamith has called for wider use of the Khmer language to improve communications between people in an emerging development triangle area between Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, the Vientiane Times reported Thursday.
The newspaper said Somchit made the remarks to Lao reporters during a break at the Sixth Conference of the Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam Development Triangle Zone for Promotion of Trade, Investment and Tourism in Samakkhixay, the provincial capital of Attapeu in southern Laos.
“Most meeting participants can understand Vietnamese but not Cambodian. This means we need to encourage people in the triangle development zone to learn Cambodian so we will find it easier to communicate with each other,” he was quoted as saying.
Laos hopes to persuade Cambodia and Vietnam to adopt its proposal to name Champassak University in Pakse as the development triangle university with courses in Khmer, Lao and Vietnamese, he reportedly said.
To attract foreign direct investment and speed up the development of the poorest areas of the three countries, the newspaper said Somchit called for additional investment incentives, such as extending tax breaks from five years to seven years and lowering fees on land concessions.
The Vientaine Times said about 250 delegates from 13 provinces in the three countries attended the one-day conference including government officials, business leaders and representatives of youth groups.
"The meeting of the three Indochina youth groups aims to remind the younger generation of the three nations' shared history, particularly the time when their citizens fought shoulder to shoulder against the same invading imperialists over three decades ago," it said. "It is hoped that an understanding of Indochina's history and cultures will promote empathy amongst the younger generation and help them to unite in the new battle against poverty."
