The Bradenton Times

Published Sunday, December 11, 2011

Saint Stephen’s Upper School History Department Head, Patrick Whelan, will travel to Siem Reap, Cambodia in January 2012 to chair a panel discussion at the World History Association’s symposium on Cambodia.

Whelan is the only high school teacher that has been invited to chair a panel at the event. Other panel chairs represent the Smithsonian, Columbia University, The US Naval Academy, Tufts University, and other various international universities. Whelan’s panel will focus on the long history of migration in the Cambodian region that has resulted in the development of religions, beliefs, and cultural practices.

“Saint Stephen’s is excited for Patrick to attend the World History Association’s symposium as the only high school teacher to chair a panel discussion. It is truly an example of the quality of knowledge and experience of our faculty,” said Jan Pullen, Head of School. Whelan has taught at Saint Stephen’s for 24 years; he teaches sophomore world history and Advanced Placement world history.

Whelan will blog live from the conference between January 2nd and January 4th. His blog will be accessible from www.saintstephens.org.

The symposium is hosted by the World History Association in conjunction with Pannasastra University of Cambodia and “seeks to generate dialog among scholars within and outside of the region regarding its place in world history. It also seeks to stimulate discussion of world history methodology as well as pedagogy while identifying those world history processes that have application to the region’s past, present and future”.
