The Cambodian Embassy in Malaysia will order the employer of a Cambodian woman who died while working in the country as a maid on December 6 to reinvestigate her death, a Ministry of Interior official said yesterday.
Chiv Phally, deputy director of the ministry’s anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection department, said the embassy would order VC Manpower, the company that sent Ouk Sakan, 40, to Malaysia about two years ago, to reinvestigate her death after her family had complained.
“The embassy official said that they would examine again to find out why the maid died,” he said.
VC Manpower’s partner company reported to Ouk Sakan’s family on December 10 that their investigation had concluded that she had died of a lung infection.
“Her family does not believe that she died this way – we are making every effort to help them and find justice for them. This is very important,” Chiv Phally said.
Ouk Sakan’s cousin Na Rith, 42, said his family could not accept that she had died from a lung infection.
“We do not believe this because when she was in her homeland, she never had an illness like this,” he said. “She was healthy.”
Ouk Sakan’s family has told the Post that in the two years that she worked in Malaysia, they did not receive a cent of her salary and heard from her only once over the phone in a conversation that lasted just five minutes.
VC Manpower could not be reached for comment yesterday.
