For Summit High School students Davis Gidney and Reena John, the inspiration for their personal project came about in a ninth grade English class reading of “First They Killed My Father,” a personal account of the Cambodian genocide.

Tuesday, the girls presented their project, entitled “A Talk to Remember,” about the “horrors and hope” involving Cambodia's child sex trade. The presentation was made in front of teachers, community members and fellow students and is the culmination of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which in Summit School District runs from sixth to tenth grade. All students spend an extended amount of time putting together a creative project of their choosing; it could be anything from a business plan to an event, or as Gidney and John did, a piece of work on a special topic. Students must journal everything from start to finish, and then make their big presentation.
