CCHR to host public forum in Stung Treng province for communities from across Prey Lang

CCHR Media Alert, Phnom Penh, 13 December 2011

CCHR to host public forum in Stung Treng province for communities from across Prey Lang

On 16 December 2011, communities living in four provinces, Kampong Thom, Kratie, Preah Vihear and Stung Treng will meet at a public forum organized by the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”) in Morn village, Anlong Chrey commune, Thala Barivat district, Stung Treng province. The forum will provide an opportunity for the communities to voice their concerns relating to illegal logging and land clearing in the Prey Lang forest. The illegal logging and land clearing has strongly affected the livelihoods of villagers throughout these four provinces.

Prey Lang, the largest remaining primary forest in Cambodia and mainland Indo-China, is being destroyed through as a result of economic land concessions being granted by the Royal Government of Cambodia (“RGC”) and related business practices throughout the area. Prey Lang communities have held a number of protests and have submitted letters to the RGC seeking assurances that the forest will remain classified as state property so that the people living in the area can continue to work off, and benefit from, the land. In November, communities the four provinces Prey Lang gathered in Sandan district, Kampong Thom province to hold a one-week campaign to patrol the forest for illegal logging. The communities scheduled a public forum, which was to be hosted by CCHR, on 14 November 2011 to share the results of the campaign but the authorities refused to allow the event to go ahead.

The public forum on 16 December will be held so as to give villagers the space to raise their concerns in regards to what has happened in the communities, to voice their suggestions to parliamentarians, local authorities, ministries, NGOs and to give institutions with a vested interest in the dispute the chance to respond to their concerns and seek a fair and peaceful resolution.
