Press Release Phnom Penh, 9 December 2011

CCHR welcomes community celebrations for International Human Rights Day

In celebration of International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2011, the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR) will support a number of activities with communities throughout the country. These events are a reminder of the increasing awareness and understanding of and demand for human rights in communities throughout the country. CCHR’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Project will support a workshop for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community in Siem Reap province to discuss social perceptions of LGBT people. Echoing comments recently made by United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the workshop is titled “LGBT rights are human rights”. In addition, CCHR’s Human Rights Network Project will provide support to 16 communities across Cambodia who are holding events in celebration of International Human Rights Day. The events – which will take place in the provinces of Battambang, Kratie, Preah Vihear, Koh Kong, Kampong Cham, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh – are expected to include 5,700 people in total. The communities will host various types of events, including public forums, marches and meetings to discuss human rights issues within their communities.
