Aussie film [about Cambodia] selected for Sundance

Australia's Wish You Were Here has been chosen for January's Sundance Film Festival.

Starring Joel Edgerton, Felicity Price, Teresa Palmer and Anthony Starr, the film centres around a holiday taken by four friends in Cambodia from which only three return.

Co-written by Kieran Darcy-Smith and Price, Wish You Were Here - which deals with what happened on that fateful night - will have its world premiere at the opening night of the 2012 World Cinema Dramatic Competition.

Producer Angie Fielder says it's exciting the film is in the festival's World Cinema Dramatic Competition category.

"Kieran and I are immensely proud and honoured that Wish You Were Here has been selected to have its world premiere at Sundance.

"It's exciting to see our film open the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Competition at a festival which celebrates independent filmmaking," she said in a statement.

Screen Australia's head of marketing Kathleen Drumm says the festival will offer Wish You Were Here a great premiere platform.

"Sundance's international competition program is one of the most sought-after premiere slots in the world. Thousands of films are submitted; only 16 are chosen.

"Established by Robert Redford in 1984, the festival is a mecca for the independent film community and, like Animal Kingdom and others before, it offers Australian cinema an outstanding debut platform," Drumm said in a statement.

Sundance has announced 16 films that will compete in each of the four other categories - US dramas, US documentaries, world dramas and world documentaries.

The festival runs from January 19-29 in Park City, Utah.

Wish You Were Here will be released nationally in cinemas next April.
