Opposition party lists litany of demands as budget passes

PHNOM PENH, (Cambodia Herald) - Opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) member of parliament Yim Sovan (pictured) said Thursday his party would continue to boycott parliament and push for a constitutional crisis until several issues are resolved.

"SRP representatives boycott because the parliament is powerless," he told reporters at the party's headquarters after the National Assembly passed next year's budget.

"We want to call on the international community to push the government to solve many big crises such as land issues and corruption. They ruin the country by increasing poverty and we do not want to have a civil war like Egypt, Tunisia and other countries. The land crisis has affected over one million people."

Yim Sovann also said his party "cannot accept the fact that the Cambodian government has leased land to foreign companies, like Chinese and Vietnamese companies, for up to 99 years.” He said his party "has to protect the people’s farmland by any means. The land crisis has recently led to frequent violence and protests like in Kompong Speu, Preah Vihear and Boeng Kak where a resident committed suicide on Tuesday."

It is not hard to understand what the opposition SRP demanded. Agricultural land concessions, land grabbing, poverty, corruptions etc. constitute a powerful argument for the next national general election. All that should be on the agenda of the next government in waiting. Unfortunately, for now the opposition can only protest, since the CPP was elected on its own platform and not the one that the opposition wanted. You know, everything can happen, even when no one expects it. In Canada after the Mulroney government, the Tories (at that time Progressive Conservative Party) had only two (2) representatives elected at the House of Common. But after the merger with the Reform Party, and having the name of the party changed to the Conservative Party, they are now at the helm of the country as a majority government. In Cambodia for the time being the opposition to the CPP is fractured, weak and full of distrusts between each other. You can always blame the party in power for mistreatments, but you should also look at yourself what you have to offer to the nation. You need to put aside some personal ambitions and put forward the interests of the country first with a united front of democrat nationalists than can win the next government. Good leaders necessary will emerge from the movement. It should not be a big sacrifice to agree to put aside personal ambitions for the sake of winning the next election first. You will all winners as well as the whole people of Cambodia. In democracy we should learn to be patient and know how to seize the opportunities when these are offered.
It is time now to prepare for the next general election. Look at what the Cambodian people need, what would be the direction we should steer the country to, our own country ambitions and the trends of the region as a whole. You need a comprehensive agenda: social justice, economic development, peace and stability of the country and our place in the region and in the world included, since Cambodia is not an isolated island. Living in harmony with our neighbours is part of the equation of that peace. Then prepare an offer that our people cannot refuse and we will all happy and enjoy the democratic process.

"Living in harmony with our neighbours is part of the equation of that peace". the comment above is full of wisdom, but please tell Hanoi and Bangkok to stop encroach and invade Cambodia.

How long are we going to live like a prisoners?

Cambodia is a sick country. Like a sick man he need to be taken to hospital to have a surgery. You have been patient enough. You have seen all the unthinkable injustice inflicted onto our people, such as eviction;land grabbing;corruption the list just go on and on.
All we need to save our country before it disappear is to have a revolution like in Libya. All dictators don't give up power. It sounds cruel, but it is the only way.
Democracy and freedom doesn't come to your door's step like free newspapers.

Life without freedom is meaningless.Country is belong to our people, not a bunch of people.
