KUALA LUMPUR: Police dismissed speculation that the Cambodian man who was detained for allegedly attempting to abduct a 6-year-old girl in Wangsa Maju on Saturday may be linked to the murder of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin in 2007.
"Absolutely not!" was the sharp retort from Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan.
He said the 33-year-old construction worker, was released unconditionally several hours later as police were convinced he was innocent.
"We checked his background thoroughly.
"He has been in the country for 10 years and has not been in any trouble with the law.
"Furthermore, there were no elements of crime involved when he approached the girl. He was just trying to be friendly."
The Cambodian was arrested at his flat in Taman Melati Utama, near Wangsa Maju, after he was suspected of attempting to abduct Nur Farihah Saifuddin at a restaurant.
The girl's mother, Rohani Abdul Rauf, 37, who witnessed the incident, told her husband who was waiting in a car.
Convinced that the Cambodian was up to no good, the father, Saifuddin Abu Samah, alerted police and tailed the man.
Zakaria said based on their investigations, the man was just being friendly when he went to the girl with his arms open.
"It was harmless and we are convinced he did not have any ulterior motive," he said, adding that the public should not be alarmed and start speculating on the case.
