First Garment Factory To Be Built in Koh Kong Special Economic Zone


AKP Phnom Penh, November 2, 2011 –The Thai company, KKN Apparel and the Cambodian company, KK S.E.Z. Co., Ltd. are going to build the first garment factory in Koh Kong province.

The contract signing ceremony was held on Oct. 31 in the presence of Koh Kong Governor H.E. Bun Leut, Koh Kong Special Economic Zone developer Okhna Ly Yong Phat, and representatives of the two companies.

Located on the area of 5 ha, the first garment factory is expected to operate in April 2012 and employ some 2,200 to 2,500 workers, according to Okhna Ly Yong Phat (pictured).

KKN Apparel is planning to build four garment factories on a total area of 20 ha in the Koh Kong Special Economic Zone, he said, adding that the four factories will employ up to 10,000 workers.

From January to September 2011, the garment exports from Cambodia have seen an increase by more than US$864 million, from US$2,268 million during the same period last year. Major markets for Cambodian garment include the U.S., the EU, Canada, and Japan, etc.

The garment sector has now employed around 320,000 workers, most of them are women.
