Backyard beauty [Cambodia in my Backyard]

Daily News, South Africa
October 28 2011

Durban designer Terrence Bray’s Cambodian-inspired range was a hit at the SA Fashion Week Summer 2012 collections in Johannesburg earlier this year. Bray drew inspiration from his Berea garden to create “Cambodia in my Backyard”, combining dreams of faraway places and the beauty of a KZN garden, complete with his cats. He then linked up with photographer Vaughn Trevellyn to take pictures of plants in his garden, and these were supersized to create dramatic prints on soft natural fabrics.

Now his fabulous fashion range has been translated into a range of gifts. Bray has partnered with Pearson & Howard to translate his concepts into a line of gift bags, cards and notepads. All the prints follow on from his “Cambodia in my Backyard” theme. The range of gifts will run concurrently with seasonal launches of Terrence Bray clothing to offer an alternative to current gift solutions.

“My cousin Deanne Gomes has the Pearson & Howard gifting company. She saw the prints and suggested they would translate well into gifting, so I reworked the prints and we are thrilled with the results,” said Bray.

They are available at Exclusive Books and Dis-Chem.

Terrence Bray designs are also available now off the peg at his new boutique in Ballito. Bray has been a driving force on the fashion scene with international and local clients clamouring for his creative couture. British Vogue named his South African label to buy and his creations have appeared on the covers of Paris Match and Pointe de Vue. The garments that he designed for Princess Charlene of Monaco put him further in the international fashion spotlight and he was one of three designers whose garments are in the Nordstrom store in New York.

The Ballito boutique is a partnership between Lyzette Kotze, an entrepreneur with an eye for fashion, and Bray, and is at The Well. Enquiries: 032 586 3228.
