The red shirts have affirmed former premier Thaksin Shinawatra will not make an appearance at the soccer match between Thai and Cambodian teams scheduled for next weekend, but the game must go on, red leader Natthawut Saikua said yesterday.
He said each team would consist of players from both countries, with Hun Sen as captain of Cambodia and Somchai Wongsawas leading the Thai team. There will be a party after the match.
Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan, who is also a red-shirt leader, said he anticipated thousands of reds, together with their leaders and Pheu Thai MPs, would turn up to cheer the game in Phnom Penh this Saturday.
He said the most important factor in the contest would be friendship not victory, so each team would include players from both countries.
Kwanchai Praipana, another red-shirt leader, said he won't attend the game because he would be helping Udon Thani people affected by the floods.
As a pro-government red shirt, he wanted to ease the workload on the prime minister in tackling flood problems. He will help by collecting donations and sending them to the victims.
"Even if ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra was attending the match, I wouldn't go to Phnom Penh again because I have already met him last week and talked with him for 20 minutes," Kwanchai said.
He said he and Udon Thani red shirts would meet Thaksin next month in Laos.

Red shirt leaders who are now members of parliament will fly off tomorrow for a friendly football match with the Cambodian premier and his subordinates.
They are planning similar football friendlies in other neighbouring countries afterwards.
A caravan of hundreds of red shirts will travel tomorrow to Phnom Penh via Poi Pet in Cambodia, opposite Sa Kaeo's Aranyaprathet district.
Red shirt key figures who are now Pheu Thai MPs and call their delegation "Red Peace" will play the football match at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh on Saturday afternoon. There they will divide into two groups and form two football teams with Cambodian authorities to boost bilateral relations.
One team will have Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen as its captain and the other's captain will be former Thai prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's brother-in-law.
Thaksin will not join the football match, Pheu Thai MP and red shirt leader Natthawut Saikua said yesterday.
The red shirt lawmakers will practise at the stadium tomorrow and the majority of their red shirt supporters will travel to Phnom Penh by road to cheer them on at the match.
Pheu Thai list MP and red shirt leader Korkaew Pikulthong said the match will start at 2.30pm on Saturday. It will begin with an opening ceremony over which Hun Sen and Mr Somchai will preside. Then both teams will exchange national flags before the game begins.
There will be a 20-minute interval while Thai and Cambodian performers and singers entertain the gathering.
Mr Korkaew said if they had enough time, they would visit Veera Somkwamkid and Ratree Pipattanapaibul who are being detained in Phnom Penh.
He said they would try to convince Cambodian authorities to release the two. Both Thais have been in jail for nine months for espionage.
Veera and Ratree were sentenced to terms of eight and six years in prison, respectively.
Mr Korkaew said his group would only try to lobby for their release while the decision really depended on Cambodia.
He said his group planned to visit Veera and Ratree as they were Thais.
Mr Natthawut added that Cambodian TV would broadcast the football match live. He, Mr Korkaew and red shirt leader and list-MP Jatuporn Prompan will play in the match.
He said his group initiated the football friendly to boost relations with not only Cambodia but also other neighbouring countries. They would hold similar matches with authorities in Laos, Vietnam, Burma and Malaysia.
He accused past Thai government of upsetting countries in the region.
