The Criminal Court on Thursday granted permission for Pheu Thai party list MP Weng Tojirakarn to travel to Cambodia from Sept 15-19.

Winyat Chartmontree, a lawyer for the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, said Mr Weng placed 600,000 baht as surety.

Mr Weng is the sixth red-shirt leader charged with terrorism in connection with violent political protests in April-May last year to have been given permission to travel abroad.

Yesterday, the court allowed five red-shirt leaders to travel to Cambodia, also from Sept 15-19, to make arrangements with Cambodian authorities for a friendly football match between Thai and Cambodian parliamentarians scheduled for Sept 24 at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.

They are Veerakan Musikhapong, Natthawut Saikua, Yossawaris Chuklom aka Jeng Dokchik, Korkaew Pikulthong and Kwanchai Praipana.

Mr Weng said the red-shirts hoped the football match would help improve Thai-Cambodian relations damaged by border fighting between the two countries during the previous government.

It was still uncertain whether former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who would also be visiting Cambodia from Sept 16-24, would take part in the football game.

Mr Winyat, the UDD lawyer, said after the six had returned from this trip, another request would be filed with the court next week for permission for the six red-shirt leaders and probably more red-shirts to again travel to Cambodia for the football match.
