Rotary Club hears update on Cambodian service project

One of the Solvang Rotary Club’s many service projects, locally and internationally, is to assist with an academy in Cambodia.

On May 15, the club had its first olive oil fundraiser and proceeds were divided equally between the Solvang Senior Center and the Cambodia Academy. Another of these olive oil “fun-raisers” is planned for 2012.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, Hans Eide, founder and president of the Cambodia Academy, was at the Senior Center and gave a school update to club members.

During the update, Solvang Rotary president Dean Elser presented Eide with a $2,614 check from the May 15 olive oil fundraiser, which will be used to sponsor students in the upcoming year.

Any additional money raised provides for teachers salaries, books, uniforms, lunches, and transportation.

While there, Eide talked about the progress of the 265 students, who are among the poorest people in central Cambodia. The school will expand next year with three new classes and a new building. He praised the support of the club over the years with the purchase of a badly needed bus, student sponsorships, and the “Solvang Rotary” classroom.

The club currently has 26 members that exchange letters with students there.

Adhering to a “service above self” philosophy, some of Solvang’s local programs are the Fourth of July Parade, assistance with the mission’s Christmas Basket Program, Sunny Fields Park, student scholarships, and much more.

For more information on the club, email Elser at dean@pacpa.com or come have breakfast at a 7 a.m. Tuesday meeting at the River Grill.

Very encouraging news! Keep up the good work all you Khmer farmers out there and thank you so much for your great efforts in feeding us. You are the back bones of Khmer economy and I love to see all of you prosper to a great extent.
