Vietnamese gamblers rescued from Cambodia

By M.Hoa
Translated by Hai Mien

The Social Security Police of Vietnam, army officials and the Cambodian police successfully rescued two gamblers held hostage in Svay Rieng Province of Cambodia on August 2.

49-year-old Tran Thi Dieu from Tan Phu District of Ho Chi Minh City and 51-year-old Pham Cong Chien from Dong Nai Province were being held hostage by Pham Thi Kim Oanh and her accomplices, who physically abused the gamblers and demanded ransom from their families.

On August 2, the Vietnamese police arrested Oanh and her accomplices , Cao Van Vu, 35, Nguyen Hoang Nam, 31, Le Thi Rang, 32, and Nguyen Thi Hanh, 35, for lending money at exorbitant interest rates and then holding the gamblers hostage at a casino in Cambodia.

Thousands of Vietnamese, mainly from the southeastern regions, go to Cambodia over the weekend for a bout of gambling. Many suffer heavy losses, having then to sell their homes and belongings to pay off debts. Some unfortunate ones are held as collaterals until their families clear their debts.

People can telephone the police on 06936844 and 0903813540 to seek help in the related matter.
