U.S. Embassy Celebrates Ramadan with Cambodian Muslim Community

Carol Rodley handed a scholarship to a Cham Muslim student to study English at Kampong Cham College.

AKP Phnom Penh, August 25, 2011 –U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia, Carol A. Rodley, will host an Iftar dinner reception for the Cambodian Muslim community in Phnom Penh at the U.S. Embassy, the embassy’s press release yesterday.

According to the press release, Ambassador Rodley will lead the observation of this Ramadan tradition with representatives of the Cambodia Muslim community, Mr. Wahid Abdullah of the Highest Council for Islamic Religious Affairs of Cambodia and Ms. So Farina of the Documentation Center of Cambodia on Friday, August 26, 2011.

Last week, Ambassador Rodley recently led a delegation of Embassy personnel to Kampot, a southwestern province hosting an Iftar for nearly 200 Cambodian Muslims.

Ramadan marks a month-long period of complete, daily fasting from sunrise to sunset for Muslims around the world. During this holy month, Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs to purify the soul, refocus attention to their faith, and practice self-sacrifice and the Iftar is the evening meal Muslims have to break their fast during Ramadan.

The U.S. Embassy in Cambodia has celebrated Ramadan events to engage the Cambodian Muslim community and to promote religious diversity since 2003.
