S. Korea to fund the restoration of Preah Pitou Temple


Cambodia and S. Korea to sign MOU on Repairing and Restoring Preah Pitou Temple in Siem Reap

AKP Phnom Penh, August 10, 2011 –Cambodia and the Republic of Korea will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on repairing and renovating Preah Pitou temple (pictured) located in West Baray, an ancient Angkor reservoir, in Siem Reap province soon.

During a meeting taking place at the council of Ministers’ office in Phnom Penh on August 9, Director General of Cultural Heritage Administration Bureau of Korea Mr. Park Yung Keun told Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Sok An, minister in charge of the council of Ministers’ office, that Korea will repair and rehabilitate Preah Pitou temple of Cambodia and an MOU on the project will be inked in upcoming day.

Korea decided to choose Preah Pitou temple to be repaired and renovated with the aim of contributing to conserving and safeguarding the Cambodian temple, said Mr. Ek Tha, deputy head of information department and a spokesman of information and quick reaction unit of the council ministers’ office, who told the reporters.

In reply, H.E. Sok An thanked Korean government for the restoring project of Cambodian temple, saying in the past Korea provided fund to renovate a 32-km road around Angkor Wat temple in order to make the local and foreign tourists less difficult to go sightseeing in the temple area.

In the meantime, he asked Korea to support Cambodia’s candidacy for president of 2012-2013 world’s heritage committee.

Preah Pitou temple is not located in or near West Baray. It is a groupe of temples located within the city wall of Angkor Thom and just North-east dirrection of Royal terrace.
