A Ph.D from MIT analyses the unmanned drone spying over Cambodia

From : aerospace engineering Ph.D (MIT)

Re: Hun Sen called unmanned drone spying an act of terrorism while calling for U.S and Australian assistance in investigation

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) represent the fastest growing and the most dynamic growth segment within the aerospace industry. Although now unmanned aerial vehicles are used mostly in military applications (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and combat operations—strike missions, suppression and/or destruction of the enemy and its facilities).

Autonomy is replacing the human operator in many applications. Examples involve military systems where there is some element of danger to the human operator, civilian systems when handling hazardous materials, as well as monotonous operations such as surveillance, reconnaissance and dull, dirty and dangerous missions, such as operations in chemical and biological environments and in environmental monitoring. The replacement of the human operator in such systems necessitates the development of autonomous systems techniques. Such autonomous systems operate in many environments, such as in the air, in and under water, in space or on the land.

Path planning is a complex problem, which involves meeting the physical constraints of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), constraints from the operating environment and other operational requirements. The foremost constraint to be met is that the paths must be flyable. Flyable paths are those that meet the kinematic constraints of the UAV. Satisfying this constraint ensures that the motion of the UAV stays within the maximum bounds on manoeuvre curvature. The safety of the path is measured by the ability of the path to avoid threats, obstacles and other UAVs. The path must maintain collision avoidance with other friendly UAVs and also must be flexible enough to avoid environmental obstacles and threats. Also, additional constraints – such as generating shortest paths, and minimum fuel and energy consumption paths – can be included for better performance and efficiency of the mission.

From spy dog to human spy now Thailand went a little bit High tech but not so well designed, Thailand still behind from the rest of the world in technology. From the picture of the wreckage Thailand wanted to design and copy of stealth technology (B2) but don’t know how .

To avoid detection from radar by using stealth technology,Thailand should first understand how radar work, once the principles of radar return are understood, the next step is to determine the overall effect of signature reduction, and how it delivers benefits for tactical mission planning. Radar cross section varies with aspect and with the frequency of the radar attempting to track it.

Both concepts have important implications for netting the tactical benefits of stealth. making a good stealth airplane is a little bit like making a bad transmitting antenna. The sender would receive so much less radiated power that the aircraft’s return signal would fall below the radar’s detection threshold until the aircraft was very close to the radar.

However, lowering radar cross section requires a trade-off between ideal low observable features and aerodynamic performance needed for a aircraft. The goal of low observable aircraft in a tactical environment is to deny timely flow of information about the aircraft’s position, elevation and heading to the enemy’s integrated air defense system. The basic goal of this process is to reduce the range at which different radars in the air defense system detect and track the aircraft.

Radar-absorbing materials and geometry of the airplane play vital roles in stealth technology (Radar-absorbing materials (RAM) are used to attenuate radar waves), it is a good comedy when Thailand try to make or say something that Thailand merely know how and understood the meaning and the fundamental of it.

This is typically an excercise in mental masterbation by some ego seeking scientists.
The question is who did this drone belong to and what was it doing there when it crashed.
Have you guys heard of a technical malfunction?
The terrorist theories are for the chief terrorist himself: HUN SEN.

Let say Malaysia's unmanned drone, that's impossible why Malayia?

Let say Burma, that's is laughable. Burma? Nope...

Let say Laos, may be but can't be. it is really surprised.

Let say VN that's possible but why VN sent it all the way to Preah Vihear Province for what...

Let Thailand, it is more likely. there are plenty of know how scientists and engineers in Thailand. They can do without government knowledge or just close the ears and eyes.

Domestic made drone in Cambodia, that's impossible but if it is true, it is scary for Hun Sen or hun sen himself behind it...

We're not in technical discussion on the technological theory on how the stealth technology works, OK. Put that damn reference book, article, or note away and discuss on where and who this crashed UAV came from. Only a dumbass would think, it's not coming from Thailand. And only a sleezy lying son-of-bitch Thailand would denied that UAV belong to it. As usual, a provocative act to stir up another fight with Cambodia by Thailand. Thailand is constantly pushing and poking around with Cambodia.

The stupid Thais military can't fly a plane and now can't fly a drone, such stupidity I tell ya...

This is exactly what I was talking about. This person is busy talking too much and forget what question was.
Listen to each other is the key, when you don't, it will be a conflict.
If you don't know, just say so, it is Ok.No body know every thing !!

If Cambodian have problem with growing foods, we don't care if you can build the rocket go to the moon !!!! It is not relevant to the issue !!!

You don't need a scientist to tell you, it is belong to Thai Army period.

During the conflict, Thai army said they didn't use cluster bomb, they din't damage the temple, then they back track on their statement. You can only judge a person base on their past behavior.

We know UAV is from Thailand. Hun Sen will prosecute the person who authorized the mission rather the whole country that is why he stay away from pointing his finger to the whole country. One of the generals will be in jail for this for life. It will be the one who is against Yungluck (new priminister).

i think hun sen stll suspect thailand sent the drone, but he didn't want to upset thaksin and the beautiful new thai pm, so he just said it is terrorism. what group in thailand and cambodia has the knowhow to build this drone, only the thai military. this drone can't fly from russia to preah vihear. and if the terrorists want to use a drone to spy to plan the attack, they would not spy in the cambodian jungle for what? to spy on the trees so they can explode a car bomb in the jungle? be real, this drone was sent by the thai military to spy on cambodian troops along the border near preah vihear so it can launch another invasion like in 2008. hun sen must remember, yingluck and the new thai gov. is not in control of the military, the generals and the thai king control the military.

Amazing Thailand didn’t know how to program the spy plane to return to the base and end up in self-destructed to get rid of bad deed but not quite get the job done.

This is embarrassing for Thailand firstly would be fair to say the humiliation for the failure of the spy mission , secondly it verify that Thai didn’t have the eyes from the sky capability, anything on Thailand intelligence report it just the speculation.

The spy satellites or Reconnaissance satellites can be further sub-categorized into the following four types, depending upon their applications:

1. Image intelligence (IMINT) or photo-surveillance satellites
2. Signal intelligence (SIGINT) or ferret satellites
3. Early warning satellites
4. Nuclear explosion detection satellites

They are generally placed in low, near-polar orbits at altitudes of 500–3000 km as they take high resolution close-up images. The resolution of images provided by these satellites is of the order of a few centimetres. Due to large atmospheric drag at these altitudes, image intelligence satellites generally have small lifetimes of the order of a few weeks. These satellites were widely used by the USA during operation Desert Storm in 1992. They provided warning of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait nearly a week before it occurred, including both the timing and the magnitude of the assault. It should be mentioned here that some high resolution non-military Earth observation satellites have also been used for military applications. These include the ORBIMAGE-4 (Orbital imaging corporation) and the QuickBird series of satellites.

Almaz space stations were also reported to have been equipped with a 23 mm Nudelman-Rikhter (NR-23) rapid-fire selflubricating cannon capable of firing 950 rounds per minute. However, the entire station had to be reoriented towards the threat in order to aim the gun. It is reported that OPS-2 carried out a successful test firing on a target satellite.

Radar detects scattered radiation from objects, and is particularly good at detecting highly reflective metallic objects against a less reflective background such as the sea or the sky. Waves are generated and transmitted in the radio-frequency part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The radar receiver then captures the reflection of the waves as they are encountered and are transmitted back from objects of interest. Since the speed of radio wave propagation from the radar is a known constant, radar systems can determine the position, velocity, and other characteristics of an object by analysis of very high frequency radio waves reflected from its surfaces.

I agree with 10:02 am.
Another smart move by Cambodian Government. Who ordered the UAV mission is terrorist. Both Thai and Cambodian Government should find that person and jail him.

If Cambodia competed in Miss.Universe then this would have never happened.

3:41PM, if only your mother competed in Miss. Universe, then this would have never happened. Just because she didn't win, don't take it on Cambodia. Go give yourself a blow, smartass.
