Hun Sen adopts a three-pronged approach to Cambodian-Thai conflict

Premier Speaks of Measures in New Context of Situation

AKP Phnom Penh, August 2, 2011 –Cambodia Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen (pictured) has said that Cambodia is now proceeding with four major approaches, namely, the military, political, diplomatic and legal measures, considering them the new context of situation that need evaluation and readiness.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who is also Five-Star Army General, was speaking in Siem Reap last Friday while calling on some 100 senior army officers positioned at the Cambodian-Thai border.

He further said that in the first context, Keo Sikhakiri Svarak Pagoda would not be a point where the invading Thai army could mix with the Cambodian army anymore, and it is also a core position where Cambodian side called “Thai invasion of Cambodia”. However, the 10 last remaining Thai troops were made to withdraw from the pagoda, and their last withdrawal is severe pain to the top Thai leaders.

Regarding the second context, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said, despite the fact that the new government of Thailand will be formed; it will not encourage the Thai army to open attacks on Cambodia like what were said by the outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

As for the third context, he said Cambodian-Thai border conflict is now on the agendas of the UN Security Council, the International Court of Justice and the ASEAN.

Defending the country by means of weapons, humans and armed attacks are the first resort but the main resort is the international affairs with the relations with other countries around the world, and especially the agendas of the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice should not be overlooked.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen called on all army officers and combatants to continue to defend the territorial integrity with the motto: “All for the National Defense, and the National Defense for All”. He said any success is attributable to the four aforementioned measures.

Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen highly appreciated and valued all army officers and soldiers of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces for having sacrificed their lives, hearts and minds for the cause of defending the nation, the motherland and the territorial integrity against the invasion by the enemies.
