The Tennis Federation of Cambodia’s worldwide appeal for talented foreign-based youngsters to help enhance the national team is beginning to pay rich dividends. The TFC has a prize catch in 19-year-old French-born Andrea Ka to fly the Cambodian flag in the women’s singles event at the 26th SEA Games to be held in Indonesia from November 11-22.
Right-handed Ka was among the top five juniors in France up to the age of 18. She took a break for a year to finish her college studies and has now been accepted by a university in the United States.
“We are delighted to have Andrea representing Cambodia. She will arrive in Phnom Penh on September 1 to start her preparations for the Indonesian trip,” TFC Secretary General Tep Rithivit told The Post yesterday.
“During my recent visit to France, I met Andrea and her parents and was readily impressed by her record. She would be an ideal choice to represent Cambodia and I am sure she will inspire a lot of other girls to pursue tennis as a career,” added the secretary.
Starting her career on the ITF Junior circuit in 2009, Ka’s most notable triumph came in the ITF Clermond Ferrand-FRA doubles event with fellow French girl Audrey Bergot.
Ka, who speaks, French, English, Spanish and Cambodian, is now ranked 1,007th in the WTA singles list.
“Andrea hasn’t played many tournaments and her ranking should definitely be better than this,” said Cambodia national team coach Braen Aneiros.
