A couple was arrested for illegally recruiting eighteen persons during a joint operation by the personnel of Tetuan Police Station, Women and Children’s Concern Section (WCCS) and Tetuan Barangay Officials at Mas Compound, Sitio Cambodia, Barangay Tetuan, this city, the other day.

WCCS chief Sr. Inspector Gemma Luna said eighteen persons, who arrived in the city last week, were safely rescued at the residence of the alleged illegal recruiter in Tetuan.

The victims told the police authority that they were offered a job by the suspects in a palm oil company in Malaysia.

The suspects and the victims were brought to WCCS office in Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) for proper documentation and investigation.

The alleged illegal recruiters are temporarily detained at ZCPO while waiting for the victims’ decision on whether or not to file a case for illegal recruitment and human trafficking in court against the suspects.

Luna told Zamboanga Today that as of the press time, the victims were hesitant to execute their affidavit to file a case against the suspects.

Luna added that after the prescribed hours of detention, both suspects will be released from police custody if there will be no charges filed against them.

However, the victims were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

In an interview with the recruiters, they averred that the victims will be provided with proper documents, issued here in Zamboanga City before they will leave to Malaysia.

However, a source said that the suspects will bring the victims to a finger-wharf at Baliwasan Seaside to avail of ferry boats bound to Sulu Province before they will illegally enter Malaysia.

The local police and other agencies have been religiously monitoring and conducting operations against illegal recruitment and human trafficking activities in the city but the recruiters continue to illegally hire workers because most of the cases filed against them do not prosper.
