Cambodian wireless operator Smart Mobile has officially announced the launch of HSPA+ services in the country, allowing users to benefit from maximum data download speeds of 21Mbps and upload speeds of up to 5.7Mbps. The actual data throughput speeds will however, depend on subscriber’s device, location and network utilisation, it said on its web site. At launch Smart Mobile’s 3.5G network is available in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, with plans to extend service coverage to Siem Reap, Battambang and Kampong Cham within the coming weeks. The rollout of HSPA+ will not end there though and over the coming months Smart Mobile intends to extend coverage to all main cities and towns in Cambodia. Outside the operator’s HSPA+ network coverage area, Smart Mobile’s subscribers will continue to be served with EDGE it added. Smart has introduced a new mobile broadband SurfLikeCrazy tariff to support the launch. Subscribers wishing to use it can dial an activation code *333# to activate the package which is charged at ten cents for up to 100MB downloads per day.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Smart Mobile became Cambodia’s eighth mobile operator when it launched commercial GSM services in Phnom Penh and Siem Riep in March 2009. Timeturn Holdings, the Cyprus-based parent of Smart’s owner Latelz, acquired licences to operate in Cambodia, Laos and Burundi in 2008 and selected Delta Telecom for the installation of 240 GSM sites in Cambodia in July that year. At launch the following March, Smart offered voice telephony, SMS and MMS capabilities, GPRS and high speed data access via EDGE technology, as well as a range of value added services and global roaming. The cellco had 850,000 subscribers at 31 March 2011, a market share of 8.2%.
