LAHORE

The first Honorary Consul General of Cambodia in Pakistan, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, has said that the Pakistan-Cambodia Business Council will soon be established for cooperation between both the countries.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Cambodian Consulate in Pakistan here on Sunday, he said that he wanted to see both countries rise and grow to great economic fronts and hoped that the consulate would be a milestone in achieving the goal. Punjab Governor Latif Khosa, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Senior Federal Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Shafey Hussain and Haris Elahi were also present.

Salik Hussain said that Cambodia had a special relevance for Pakistan in more than one context. He said Cambodia had already gone through turmoil after the Vietnam War 30 years ago, similar to our own experiences with reference to Afghanistan, Cambodia has embarked on a successful path of peace, reconciliation and progress. He said Cambodia was part of ASEAN - Association of South East Asian Nations, which included one of the world s fastest and most promising economic growth regions in the world, along with China. He said the 21st century was an Asian century, and the pillar of the rise of Asia would be the region where Cambodia was located. He said that since Cambodia was primarily a Buddhist country, it was important to note that Pakistan contained one of the most historical heritages of Buddhism in places like Taxila and Takhtbhai.

Salik Hussain lauded the efforts of Mushahid Hussain, the secretary general of the PML-Q and as well as of an Asia-wide organization of political parties, ICAPP, and civil society organisation through which he had established Pakistan s positive and strong relations with other Asian countries located in the region.

Mushahid Hussain said that both Cambodia and Pakistan would progress in the economic and social sectors under the young and dynamic leadership of Chaudhry Salik. He said the Chaudhry family had always enjoyed very warm relationship with Japan, China, Cambodia and other countries of the region. He said Chauhdry Shujaat Hussain was appointed as the honorary Consul General of Korea in Pakistan. He was of the view that Cambodia had been on the road to progress for a while now and its economic growth had accelerated substantially, currently standing at six percent.

Punjab Governor Latif Khosa congratulated Salik Chaudhry and marked the day as the start of lasting, progressive and productive relations between the two countries.
