Cambodian band gets the Bangkok crowd moving

In between showers of torrential rain, RCA Avenue was the venue for an alien invasion on Saturday night, as the Phnom Penh-based band The Cambodian Space Project, descended on a packed house at Cosmic Cafe for their long-awaited first full-band gig in the City of Angels.

With a debut album - 2011 A Space Odyssey (Metal Postcard, Hong Kong) - causing waves in the "world music" scene and generating lots of interest in Europe, the band was on a stopover en-route to a first UK tour during which they will record a track for BBC Radio 3. Not bad for a band that started after guitarist and bandleader Julien Poulson saw singer Srey Thy perform at a karaoke bar.

Supporting the band was DJ Maft Sai of Bangkok Paradise fame. In September, Maft will be joining DJ Chris Menist, who has now relocated to the UK, for a six-week tour of Europe that will feature the duo's Bangkok Paradise and Isan Dancehall DJ shows.

Before the gig bandleader Poulson said that The Project had just finished recording a second album. "Our first album really reflects the live shows we've been doing over the past two years," he explained. "But the new one, which we've just finished, is much spacier, much deeper. It's really beautiful." No release date yet but those readers who enjoyed the debut album should look out for the new one.

As some members of the original line-up have relocated to France and other countries (sadly, this includes the Breton accordion player), three key members - Poulson, singer Thy and drummer Bong Sak - arrived for the Bangkok gig, joined by an enthusiastic local punk bass player whose name I didn't catch (he was good, too). Two more members will join the band in the UK for the shows there. Read the full article and more pictures here.
