Border talks
Cambodian and Thai military officials are set to convene in Thailand for three days of talks on overall border issues, setting the stage for a high-level meeting of the bilateral General Border Committee expected to be hosted in Phnom Penh.

Chea Morn, commander of Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Region 4, said yesterday that 35 senior military officials would depart for the Thai province of Nakhon Ratchasima today for meetings with their counterparts in Thailand’s 2nd Army Area through the Regional Border Committee.

“We will discuss the overall issues along the Cambodian-Thai border such as security and military relationships, and most important is that we will make an effort to build trust in each other as the core issue to make progress on a border resolution,” he said.

“We hope that within the new era of cooperation, we will make some progress on the stalemate issues,” Chea Morn added.

The bilateral meeting, set to begin today, is the first since Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra took power.

Ministry of Defence spokesman Chhum Socheat could not be reached for comment yesterday.
