Bangkok, July 20 (Kyodo) Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva (pictured) said Thailand can not immediately comply with the International Court of Justice's measures to end the disputed border conflict around a 12th century Hindu Shiva temple with Cambodia.
Abhisit told a press conference after meeting with the Defense, Foreign and other ministries that he assigned officials to study the legal effect of the order and let a new government come into power before complying with the order. The International Court of Justice in The Hague on Monday ordered Thai and Cambodian troops to withdraw from border areas around a disputed World Heritage temple.
The court, which had been asked by Cambodia to rule on a prolonged and deadly border dispute near the ancient Preah Vihear Temple, said both sides in the dispute must immediately pull their militaries back from the disputed area. "I again assure that the court order will not affect our sovereignty, but we need time to study and pass it on to the new government," Abhisit said.
Abhisit added Thailand has analyzed all information based on facts and concluded that the court-ordered demilitarized zone would cover an area of 17.3 square kilometers. "We expect Cambodia will pull out around 40,000 soldiers from the area...our troops (in the area) are much fewer," he added. "We don't lose any benefit," Abhisit said. Abhisit said it is not easy to implement the court-ordered measures, especially the troop withdrawal and particularly in cases where Cambodian troops brought their families to live in the disputed area.
Abhisit, who must step down after his party lost the general election earlier this month, said he believes the new government led by the Pheu Thai Party will deal with the World Court order "based on national benefit." After UNESCO declared Preah Vihear Temple a World Heritage site in 2008 despite Thai protests, Cambodian and Thai forces have skirmished across the disputed border in the area several times. The sometimes pitched battles resulted in more than a dozen deaths, scores of injuries and the displacement of thousands of local residents on both sides of the border.(Kyodo)

Where did Thailand heading with the accusation that Cambodia troops brought their families to live along the border or so call dispute area (DMZ)? Did Thailand wanted to legitimize their attacked on civilians or future attacks? Thailand accusation that Cambodia has more troops than Thailand in the DMZ is indication that Thailand were there to defense themselve not the agressor by silently saying "how could we attack Cambodia if our troop less then them" Thailand wanted to blind the world and played victim in this dispute. The stall tactics by having study team waiting to hand over the next government to implement the ICJ ruling is pretty much washing the hands but it also wanted to ensure that the next Thai's government doesnt get the short end of the stick. Remember, Thailand throwing around those 17.3 square kilometers number to ensure that claim of the dispute 4.6km area as PM Hun Sen never recognize it. Cambodia teams needed to meet each other and come up with different strategies to handle future situation rather than waiting to response.
DMZ=Thailand got Door Entrance! Khmer got Temple. If khmer want to enter the Temple, khmer have to go through Thai security checking...Suck!
Don't get it. Nowhere it says Thailand got the entrance. Weird.
Dear Mr.Oxford graduate
If the 4.6 km^2 is a disputed land and Thai has 60+ millions of population versus less than 15 millions of Cambodians why on earth there are none of Thai citizen in this area but the Khmers only ? Please don't tell me that Thai did not move in because it respects 2000 MOU ! Thais know how to frick and disperse population long long before the year 2000 like every ethnic group but then why no Thais living here.
Falkland island is thousands of miles away from England but populated by the Britons and is rightfully belongs to the British according to the wish of Falkland island dwellers.
Now if a Thai with a Higher Degree from Oxford shows this kind of retarded mentality, what kind of hope mankind should expect from the land of fake smile ?
