The SRP Calls The ICJ Ruling A Shameful Defeat For The Hun Sen Government

18 July 2011

ICJ RULING: A SHAMEFUL DEFEAT FOR THE HUN SEN GOVERNMENT

As elected representatives of the Cambodian people, we are deeply disappointed with today’s ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague ordering both Cambodia and Thailand to withdraw their troops from a large area surrounding Preah Vihear temple. This Khmer temple indisputably stands on Khmer territory and is placed under Cambodia’s sovereignty according to a judgment by the same ICJ in 1962.

Following three years of aggression by Thailand and resulting violation of Cambodia’s territory, today’s inconsistent and shocking decision by the ICJ unacceptably put the aggressor and the victim on the same footing.

This ICJ ruling represents a shameful defeat for the Hun Sen government whose incompetence is blatant when it comes to the defense of Cambodia’s territorial integrity on both our western and eastern borders.

We renew our call for the Hun Sen government to resign because of its inability to effectively defend Cambodia’s territorial integrity in the face of foreign aggressions.

The only effective way to defend Cambodia against any foreign aggression is through peaceful means, notably by calling for the implementation of the 1991 Paris Agreements on Cambodia, as opposition leader Sam Rainsy told Prime Minister Hun Sen to do, in his 11 February 2011 open letter listing measures and initiatives that Cambodia should take for her defense against Thailand’s aggression.

If this statement can help them to feel good about themselves, it is understandable! They discredit themselves everyday by saying anything that cannot persuade anyone. They think that Cambodians are idiots and can believe anything they tell them. What a pity! Actually they try to copy the yellow shirts in Bangkok. But please look at the result of the last general election in Thailand. Does the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement have any jurisdiction on borderlines when Thais have their own map and repeat that they didn’t violate Cambodian sovereignty? Talking about 1991 Paris Peace Agreement, they actually helped HS in modifying the constitution on the majority in parliament. According to the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement the majority required 2/3 of the house, but SR wanted just 50% + 1 so that HS can stay in power for ever!

I felt sorry for Sam Rainsy Party. You are not in the level of CPP. CPP is very sophisticated and full of knowledgeable individuals surrounded PM Hun Sen. Just reading the article, I feel that you guy attack PM Hun Sen in everythings. I dont like the decision handed by ICJ too but I wouldnt criticized their works based 1991 Paris Peace Agreement. I heard that argument before and you guy should scraped it. The government worked very hard and althought the ruling doesnt favor Cambodia much but we should continue to encourage to becareful, listen to the unspoken words, listen to the hidden meanings etc. I would love to see the government sue Thailand at ICJ for the damage caused by the shellings. The government has every evidences to nail Thailand for the damages.
