Spain supports Cambodia for UNSC post: ambassador

Spain's ambassador to Cambodia, Mariano Alonso Buron, bids farewell to Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong.

PHNOM PENH, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The outgoing ambassador of Spain to Cambodia Mariano Alonso Buron said Monday that Spain will fully support Cambodia for the position of non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in a vote next year.

The ambassador said during a farewell call on the Cambodian deputy prime minister Hor Namhong.

"Based on good cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries, Spain expressed her full support for Cambodia in the UNSC's non-permanent member in 2013-2014 term," Koy Kuong, the spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs, told reporters after the meeting.

"Cambodia wants this role at the UNSC because since 1955, Cambodia has never had any role at this body," he added.

On Saturday, during a meeting with the Prime Minister Hun Sen, the visiting French Prime Minister Francois Fillon also promised to fully support Cambodia for the post of non-permanent member of the UNSC, said Ouch Borith, a secretary of state for the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation.

Just curiosity, could any body explain the pro and con and how much will cost Cambodia each year? It is great that Cambodia wanted to part of the world. Cambodia is young and struggling economically. Are we ready for it?
