VIVID memories of a childhood in Cambodia has driven McKinnon resident Zoe Condliffe back to the developing country.

The 21-year-old will spend next year leading dance, art and photography classes for disadvantaged youths as part of a Mayibuye project, a non-profit organisation that helps keep youth off the streets in South Africa, Australia and Cambodia through performing arts.

Ms Condliffe said she became interested in the country’s history and culture after living there aged two to four when her father worked for the United Nations.

“I remember it vividly,” she said.

“I grew up with discussions about Cambodia, books and culture ... the people are the most giving people considering the civil war.”

Ms Condliffe spent five months in Cambodia in 2009 teaching English to children.

On her return she started a double arts degree at Monash University and began seeking opportunities to contribute to the welfare of others.

She took part in the Make Poverty History Roadtrip in 2010 and is completing an internship with Youth Challenge International and studying at Monash’s school for social entrepreneurs.

“I’m lucky enough to have an education and live in a great country and I believe I have a responsibility to give to others who do not have the same opportunities,” she said.

For her volunteering trip, Ms Condliffe will be based in the Takeo province, in the south of Cambodia, for a year from January.

The project will involve teaching dance, art and crafts to encourage confidence, creativity and promote leadership.
