TWELVE students from Arden Anglican School have returned from a 13-day cultural awareness and mission trip to Cambodia.
The group led by Dr Maree Skillen flew out on June 24 and engaged in traditional Cambodian customs of eating tarantulas, red-ants and crickets and using the local tuk-tuk (tricycle) transport. They also attended a Cambodian cooking class.
They visited the Angkor Wat Temple, the floating villages on the Tonle Sap Lake and an orphanage in Phnom Penh. The group also gave $18,000 raised by Arden Anglican School and Epping local businesses towards a house-building project in Phnom Penh.
Twelve new houses are to be built, with funds directed to the non-denominational Christian aid organisation, Tabitha Foundation.
Epping businesses which supported the purchase of an entire house included Bendigo Bank, North Epping; Tracy Yap Real Estate; and Hire A Hubby.
The houses will be in the village of Salalek 5, in the district of Kampong Chhnang, about half an hour north-west of Phnom Penh. The school will be continuing fundraising efforts to provide additional infrastructure needed by the families inhabiting the homes.
