LIKE countless $10-a-day backpackers, this barefoot traveller marvels at the landscape as her roughly hewn boat cuts across the lily pads of northern Cambodia.

But that's no backpack: it's a R9500 Louis Vuitton "Alto" holdall.

And Angelina Jolie is reported to have been paid a career-record $10-million to feature in the luxury goods company's latest adverts. Jolie, who is also a UN ambassador, joins Mikhail Gorbachev, Keith Richards and Sir Sean Connery as a star of the French company's "core values" campaign.

The actress, whom the company said had donated her fee to charity, first visited northern Cambodia in 2000 to star as the deadly "tomb-raider" Lara Croft.

In 2002, she adopted her first child, Maddox, from an orphanage there and three years later was given Cambodian citizenship by King Norodom Sihamoni.

Pietro Beccari, executive vice-president of Louis Vuitton, told Women's Wear Daily: "People are not used to seeing Angelina in this situation. I like the fact that it's a real moment."

It is not only the moment that's real: the Vuitton bag is Jolie's own, and she has had it for so long that the company has stopped producing it.

Beccari said it might well be reintroduced, sooner rather than later.
