Japanese comedian wins 2nd prize in Phnom Penh half-marathon

PHNOM PENH (Kyodo) -- Japanese comedian Hiroshi Neko finished second in the first international half-marathon held Saturday in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Neko, 33, from Chiba Prefecture, earned a $700 second-place prize and was awarded a silver medal after the race, in which more than 1,600 athletes from 18 countries took part.

Vath Chamroeun, secretary general of National Olympic Committee, announced that Cambodian Hen Bunting won the race, with an Australian finishing third.

At a welcome dinner held on Friday evening, Neko said he is applying for Cambodian citizenship with the aim of representing Cambodian athletes at various international sports events such as the Olympics.

Last year, Neko finished third in the 15th international half-marathon held at the Angkor Wat temple complex, in which some 4,050 athletes from 53 countries took part.
