TRAVERSE ALONG THE MEKONG FOR AN AUTHENTIC AND MEMORABLE CAMBODIAN COUNTRYSIDE EXPERIENCE

There's lots to see in Cambodia. Traverse along the Mekong River and discover a side of the country not many experience, authentic Khmer rural living.

(TRAVPR.COM) THAILAND - May 20th, 2011 - Cambodia has its way with visitors. It is hard to explain it. But perhaps a trip along the Mekong River might explain things a little bit. With unparalleled opportunities to explore the country’s rural beauty and traditional culture, this extraordinary journey is crafted for the individual seeking an authentic experience away from the promoted and commercialized areas such as Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Depart the capital with a drive north to Stung Treng. You’ll have ample opportunities to stretch those legs and to absorb the local flavor. There are several rural temples along the way as well as small villages for you to immerse yourself in. Included along the way is a stop at a unique rubber plantation near Kampong Cham.

At Stung Treng, you’ll have the chance to really settle in a common countryside Cambodian community at the village of O'Svay. Established as an eco-tourism project, you will take a boat ride through the islands and flooded forests of the Mekong. Revel in the environment as you enjoy your picnic lunch on one of the remote islands. While here, get in touch with the traditional culture and be treated to puppet shows and dances.

Since you are by the Mekong, wouldn’t you want the chance to catch a glimpse of the rare and elusive Irrawaddy Dolphin? This truly is a once in a lifetime experience, if you happen to see one. You have to be quick though. Always have your camera ready.

Transfer on to Kratie. From there, you’ll be rewarded with a soothing experience on the Mekong itself; exploring Koh Trong, a small island in the middle of the Mekong River. And not just a walking tour. We’ll throw in horse drawn carriages and bicycles for you to further immerse yourself in pure Cambodian rural life.

And more Khmer countryside flavor awaits you. Head on south to Kampong Thom. On the way stop to visit Chhlong, a tiny town with many French colonial houses. Once you reach Kampong Thom, take the opportunity to relax. Whether it is by your hotel’s inviting pool, a peaceful stroll along the tree-lined river bank or via a walk through the happening market, it’s all up to you.

Even before the construction of Angkor Wat, there was Sambor Prei Kuk. Built somewhere between the 6th and 7th centuries, the forested monasteries contain over 100 well preserved temples. Continue towards Siem Reap, about 2.5 hours away, and transfer to the magnificent Angkor Wat in time for sunset. That’s two great temples in one trip. Not a bad day at all.

Conclude your rural Cambodian experience with a walk through some fine history at Angkor. All sorts of temples are here. You just witnessed one of the finest. You’ll also see a tree covered one as well as other impressive structures, on the back of an elephant as well!

More Khmer experiences await. See what’s in store via our Cambodia tours. You will be awe struck!
