Thailand has more to lose for going to war with Cambodia

Anonymous said...

Many Thais still see the humiliation of the 1962 World Court ruling that officially recognized Preah Vihear temple and its surrounding area as Cambodian territory, despite a fund-raising effort in which every Thai citizen had donated at least one Baht (about 2.5 cents) to support Thailand's legal team.

And many Cambodians can't forget how the Thai government helped prolong the wars of the 70s and 80s by supporting the murderous Khmer Rouge and the non-communist Khmer resistance against the Vietnam-backed regime of Cambodia. Going back even further, Thailand's rivalry with Cambodia stretches back hundreds of years, dating back to when Thailand was known as Siam, which had its capital in Ayutthaya, when it always feuded with the neighboring Khmer Empire.

During the "dark ages" that followed, Siamese incursions weakened the Cambodian kingdom further. King Naresuan viciously invaded the capital city of Longvek in 1594 and successive Thai monarchs competed with Vietnam over control of the beleaguered Khmer kingdom.

These conflicts allowed the French to establish control over the severely weakened Cambodian kingdom in 1863. World War II led to more causes for resentment as Thailand occupied Angkor Wat and many parts of western Cambodia for the duration of the conflict.

International law turn the tide in Cambodia's favor in 1962 when the International Court of Justice ruled that Preah Vihear temple lies in Cambodian territory and the Annex I Map, which puts Preah Vihear temple inside Cambodian territory and which wholly accepted by the then Siamese government in 1907, is binding.

Should Thailand decide to back its claim up with force, Thailand will find itself at a logistical disadvantage ( Thailand's second hand American-made F16s will go against Russian and Chinese unknown newly invented hardware). If Thailand wins, Thailand can't have Preah Vihear temple and the land surrounding it. If Thailand lost, Thailand will lose everything and once again will be humiliated by a small Cambodia. The stakes are too high and Thailand won't risk to wage a war with the hardcore ex-Khmer Rouge soldiers.

Thailand claimed: “Although Cambodia created perception that it was harassed by Thailand and tried to win sympathy from the International Community, Thailand would not allow Hun Sen, a bully boy, to bully Thailand…”. Read Sondhi Limthongkul, and the idea of little Cambodia bullying Thailand seems somewhat far-fetched.

The“battle” that began on 4/2/11and 22/4/11. that alleged claimed Hun Sen’s aim was to get international involvement, hoping for another win like that in 1962 at the World Court. Thailand is dead scared of this. Thailand trumpeted its own readiness to “defend Thailand in all venues.” Thailand proclaimed: “We should not forget that we have the US a true friend.”

On 9 Feb 2011 The Nation reports on an appearance by Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya at a “seminar on Thai-Cambodian relationship at Parliament held by the Senate committee on foreign affairs.”

Kasit went on the attack. Notoriously unprepared for public appearances, Kasit speak off the cuff and, it seems, with little thought. This time he also seemed remarkably disoriented about which country he was attacking.

He “called Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen a bully boy who launched attacks against Thailand with hope to seize control of the disputed plot near Preah Vihear Temple.” Of course, it has been the Thai side under the Abhisit Vejjajiva government and at the urging of ultra-nationalists of the People’s Alliance for Democracy. For a recent account of the PAD position versus that of the current government.

Kasit claimed that the “conflicts between the two countries happened because the Cambodian government incited hatred among its people towards Thailand. Kasit said the Cambodian government told its people that Thailand had been bullying Cambodia during the past 600 and 700 years.” Is he confusing Thai school textbooks and PAD’s rhetoric with that from Cambodia?

Cambodia weapon is not a slingshot AK 47 far more superior than M16 155mm Thai artillery nowhere near the BM 21 (BM 21 80% more powerful than Thai artillery BM 21 can unleash 40 rockets in mere minute) infantry wide only Thai out number Cambodia 1/3 .

If Cambodia have good stockpiles of SAM and anti-ship missiles and long range missile that can reach Bangkok Cambodia have the reason of winning the wars.

Thai intelligence speculated Cambodia may have 70 unit of PHL03 and 10 unit of Russian made medium range missile that can reach Thai major airports.

In the last two round of fighting on 2011 Thai fighter jets won't risk to fly over Cambodia airspace only on the February the joint exercise with US Thai and US fighter jets fly along the border just in case Cambodia accidental shot US fighter jet down that was the Thai malicious intention they not suppose to fly in the frontline shit may happen those Chinese SAM may automatic trigger itself and shot down fighter jet by accidents.
