DEBBIE Kendrick is preparing to embark on the biggest challenge of her life when she travels to Cambodia to help build houses for land mine victims.
The 53-year-old, who has lived in Hinckley for most of her life, will jet out to Asia in November as part of the Cambodia Community Challenge being organised by disability charity Scope.
She will be one of 20 people from all walks of life from across the UK joining in the effort to build stilt homes for those who have been injured, some even losing limbs, due to land mines in the country.
Debbie, a business developer, is being sponsored throughout by insurance brokers Needham Commercial Insurance and is delighted that she can help out those in Cambodia as well as raising cash for Scope.
She said: “I am taking this challenge very seriously as I don’t want to let down my sponsors. I know I will have to be very fit so I am walking everywhere and am on a healthy diet to lose a few stone before I go.
“I have pledged to raise £3,200 for Scope. They are one of the largest disability charities in the UK and I want to support their work with disabled people and their families.”
To help raise the money Debbie is holding a number of events with the next being a northern soul night at The Chase Hotel, in Nuneaton, on Friday June 3 with tickets costing £5 in advance or £7 on the door. Other events will include pamper evenings, a sponsored head shave, a business networking lunch and a posh frock swap among others.
Debbie, who now lives in Nuneaton, is also collecting unwanted CDs and DVDs, which she will recycle to add to her growing funds. Anyone wanting to donate CDs or DVDs can drop them off at Needham Commercial Insurance’s office in Station Road, Hinckley.
