PHNOM PENH, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Approximately 60 parliamentarians from 20 French-speaking countries gathered here on Monday aimed at strengthening and expanding development cooperation.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the first vice-president of Cambodian National Assembly, Nguon Nhil said that the meeting was held while the globe is facing many challenges such as political unrest in the Middle East, soaring oil price, rising inflations and U.S. currency depreciation.
"It's very vital that we meet and build closer ties among each other in time of difficulties in order to seek ways to help sustain the development of respective countries," he said.
He added that for Cambodia, now it is on the right track to develop its economy. It's predicted that the country's economic growth this year will exceed 6 percent.
In the meeting, the parliamentarians will also discuss on the cooperation in combating HIV/AIDS.
The meeting, which runs until May 27, will discuss and pass some document relevant to development cooperation among Francophone countries in order to submit to the 37th General Assembly of Francophone countries in July in Congo.
