Cambodian rice exporting companies are predicting that Cambodia's rice exports will increase fourfold or fivefold this year from the 2009's and 2010's exports.
Mr. Phou Puy, president of Baitong, a Cambodian producer and exporter of agricultural product, said that in the first quarter of 2011 his company had exported 50,000 tons of rice, which is equivalent to the whole of 2010's exports. He said his company had mostly exported to European, American and Australian markets as well as a number of Asian countries, particularly China, which has just started ordering rice from Cambodia. "Nowadays, the markets are waiting for us. How can we make efforts to supply those markets at an international standard. As such, in the European Union and in a number of Asian countries, they are very interested in Cambodia. Does Cambodia have enough quantity (of rice) to supply to them?", he said.
The Cambodia government has set a target of 1 million tons exports of rice by 2015. Experts said this is a very high target, but conceded that it is achievable. Cambodia called rice as the country's "white gold".
