LONG BEACH - While race fans will be whooping it up downtown at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, there will be an entirely different vibe among members in the Cambodian community.

At a pair of events Sunday, community members will gather to remember the 36th anniversary of the April 17 rise to power of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot and the onset of the genocide that led to the deaths of an estimated 2 million Cambodians between 1975 and 1979.

For the seventh year, the Killing Fields Memorial Center Inc. will sponsor events to commemorate the date and pray for the dead.

Beginning at 9 a.m., a requiem mantra prayer blessing the victims will be held at Wat Vipassanaram, 1239 E. 20th Street.

At that event, monks will pray for and bless the souls of the victims of the atrocities of the time.

Later in the day, beginning at 3 p.m. until dusk there will be an interfaith remembrance and candlelight vigil at 1501 E. Anaheim St., which is to be the future home of the Killing Fields Memorial Park.

Sixth District City Councilman Dee Andrews is expected to speak and survivors of the genocide will be invited to share their stories.
